Surachet aims high with Aseambankers
Chaipatamanont started his career with Bear Stearns as a financial analyst in New York before moving to Peregrine Capital, initially as an associate in the corporate finance team in New York. He then became a senior manager in Hong Kong with regional responsibilities.
In 1996, Chaipatamanont, who has a degree in electrical engineering from Columbia University, joined JPMorgan as a corporate financier. He subsequently moved to the financial institutions group in Singapore. He left the US firm in 2004 to set up his own firm covering NPL opportunities in India and China.
Chaipatamanont’s arrival is part of a bigger shake-up at Maybank. Spencer Lee, who was at Maybank Singapore, is now the head of consumer banking. Aminuddin Md Desa is the new head of insurance and takaful, and the former president of Maybank Philippines, Lim Hong Tat, is now charged with running the international business. These moves, the bank hopes, will enable it to provide clients with integrated financial packages.
