What's your role as chief executive?
There are many aspects. I think I can still add value on client relationships and client service. I'm involved in making the big strategic and operational decisions and ensuring they are quickly and effectively executed. I have a significant communication job to do internally. Probably the most challenging aspect is to try and balance different interests at a senior level. At times obviously there are conflicts, and it's my job to assess them and then highlight the way forward into concrete action.
People describe you as cerebral. Do you shut your door and spend time just sitting and thinking?
It doesn't usually happen in my office, because there's always a visitor, a phone call, a video conference, or an e-mail that I have to respond to quickly. As with anyone in a senior capacity, a lot of my time outside these four walls is spent on bank issues. I make sure I have a lot of time to spend with my colleagues and staff. Feedback from clients is also very useful.
