Our award for best bank in Europe this year goes to Deutsche Bank which has the distinction of being the only European bank to have pushed its way into the ranks of the global players with operations in 70 countries. Though at home it is experiencing the same difficulties as the other German banks, which are all struggling to make a profit in a market dominated by public and savings banks, it still deserves this prize for the quality of its corporate and investment banking franchise.
The breadth of Deutsche's expertise is clear from the fact that it wins four out of seven awards in Western Europe and in the areas where it misses out, with the exception of M&A, it is still a strong contender. It has sizeable securities services operations globally and its equities division is highly regarded, particularly in the area of derivatives.
The bank is split into two divisions - corporate and investment banking (CIB) and private clients and asset management.
