The combination of mergers, the tech wreck and the ensuing severe economic downturn has shaped the fortunes of North America's financial services sector over the past 12 months. And in that environment the more established names have shown their relative strength. For more established, read large. This has not been the year for the niche bank to prosper, in investment banking at least.


Transaction services are to a degree less affected, with consolidation being the major factor in that market's development.
