Banco General was founded in 1955 by a group of Panamanian entrepreneurs and has held a leadership position in the local financial arena ever since. Banco General holds the number-one position among Panamanian private banking institutions with $2.3 billion in assets, $1.6 billion in deposits and $1.4 billion in loans, as of March 2001.
In November 2000, Banco General became the only private Panamanian bank with an investment rating from Standard&Poor's, when the agency rated it at BBB-.
