So many banks now send research to clients by e-mail that banks and investment houses have started hiring people whose only job is to read e-mail alerts and research websites, so that they can pass on the information that fund managers need. This is the internet at its worst – creating work rather than efficiencies.

Chase Manhattan’s bonds research page works hard to avoid this information overload. It stands out as the most customizable site available, with the best system of filters and the best use of screen space of any demonstrated to euromoney.com. Other banks can boast sophisticated daily web casts and audio downloads, offering the same piece of research in several formats. This is certainly impressive, but it smacks of using technology for its own sake. Investors looking for simplicity and support are better off with Chase.

John Hollyer, principal portfolio manager at the Vanguard Group, uses the international fixed income research page. He says: “The site is great, because it is more than just PDF files of research. It is more interactive, so that you can select bonds and graph them in a number of ways. When you think about it, a website full of PDF files is only marginally better than research that you get in the mail – the only difference beings its timeliness.”
