At the lowest end of the income spectrum, these people need nothing more than a simple bank account. At the other end, individuals are beginning to take out credit cards, mortgages and other consumer finance products.

At the same time, companies are becoming more aggressive and more sophisticated in their strategies and are therefore looking towards the banks and capital markets to fuel their growth. In short, Latin America is developing a proper banking system in which financial institutions are beginning to act more as intermediaries than as investors in high-yielding government securities.
