Tony Fernandes, founder of AirAsia and QPR chairman |
The prize for strangest interview of the month goes to television-friendly Malaysian serial chief executive and football chairman Tony Fernandes. The founder of AirAsia and chairman of English Premier League club Queens Park Rangers turned up for his interview with Euromoney an hour late, with no socks on, carrying a plastic bag and wearing a T-shirt that he might well have slept in.
He proceeded perfectly charmingly with the interview while having make-up applied and his hair brushed, all the while shouting instructions at staff and at one point even stripping down to his underpants to allow the wardrobe staff of the TV show he was about to film to cloak him in more CEO-like attire.
Once fully suited he still had his sock issue to overcome, solving this by persuading his PR manager to give him his just worn pair. Euromoney pretended not to be a little grossed-out by this.
He also borrowed a belt from a TV production man wearing a Liverpool FC shirt. Fortunately he didn’t borrow the shirt. To do so would have just given fans of relegation-threatened QPR one more reason to see red.
