Last summer, Reid set himself the task of learning the instrument and, impressively, has already posted a blistering rendition of Rihanna’s Diamonds online.
“The YouTube clip has seemed to have gone viral, in the financial market at least, with over 5,000 views,” he says. “However, the original has had nearly 547 million clicks so I'm not about to give up my day job yet.”
Reid made his live debut, in front of 400 people, in November, and footage of his cover of The Beatles’ Let It Be and a self-penned number Goodbye can also be found on YouTube, first picked by Business Insider.
“The organizers of our DB Dutch 2015 outlook – held at the Dutch equivalent of the Royal Albert Hall – twisted my arm to play at the event,” he says. “So after four months of playing that focused the mind to practice! It was a great experience but nerve-wracking playing in front of 400 hardened fund managers! Having had a career of public speaking and enjoying it I was stunned how nervous I got.”
Reid’s newfound musical prowess tops off a busy year, when he has also suffered multiple ligament injuries during skiing expeditions, so he is now focusing on honing his piano skills. “Hopefully markets give me enough peace that I can achieve that,” he says.
