Bank atlas 1997: The world's leading banks

The world's top 200 banks and world bank ranking:This year's rankings in the Euromoney Bank Atlas were compiled in conjunction with Ibca Limited. All information was supplied by Ibca from banks' consolidated annual reports for the years 1995 and 1996.Only those institutions whose primary business is taking deposits are eligible for inclusion. Figures are presented, where possible, in consolidated form, including data from non-banking activites. Banks which are owned by other financial institutions are not listed separately, but are consolidated in the parent's figures. Banking groups are limited, however, to those where the parent holds management control over subsidiaries. Notes:
Germany:
Genußscheine (participation certificates) are excluded

Japan: where banks are engaged in trust business, deposits include banking-type trust funds

Russia: banks are ranked in two tables according to international and Russian accounting standards

The world's top 50 banks by market capitalization:

Information for the ranking by market capitalization was provided by Morgan Stanley & Co International, and is correct as of May 16 1997.
