Sitting on the balcony of his plush Bangkok apartment building, sipping his gin and tonic and watching the city's pollution-enhanced sunsets (the fumes make for some spectacular pink and orange evenings), one of Bangkok's most prominent farang investment bankers is amused to see a poignant sign of the times.
Our banker is one of the lucky few foreigners to have retained his job in the business and actually done rather well out the mayhem. His pad has a panoramic view of Sathorn Road - Bangkok's Wall Street - from where he can see the back of the mighty Bangkok Bank head office, right next to the gleaming Citibank tower.
Much to his amusement, many of the illuminated neon letters which grace the top of the Bangkok Bank building could do with some maintenance. So, beaming across the night sky in very large letters is "OK BANK" - a reassuring message to shareholders and depositors, maybe.
We understand the problem has now been fixed. Gill Baker
