In a Euromoney poll published in September, Deutsche Bank came top in all three categories for Euro-MTNs: arrangers, private placements, and dealers. It was an impressive performance - all the more so considering that as recently as the beginning of 1997, Deutsche barely had an MTN business to speak of.

Much of the credit for the bank's rapid emergence must go to Tiina Lee, who joined from Lehman Brothers in May 1997. According to a competitor, she is "very capable, bright, and motivated". An issuer adds: "In this business you have be flexible and have an ability to think laterally around problems - and she certainly has that. She's also very even-tempered - you never hear frustration down the phone like you do with many."

Though only 31, Lee is something of an MTN veteran, having first worked as a trader in the market in 1993. Many with her experience would have since moved on to debt capital markets or syndicate - her decision to stay put has paid off. "I may well do something different in the future," she says.
