Clare Marshall |
When Clare Marshall stepped down as treasurer of the Export Development Corporation last month, the world of borrowing lost one of its more innovative and colourful characters. A bluff, good-humoured bear of a man, he is someone for whom the expression "larger than life" might have been invented.
Marshall's stamina is legendary. A veteran of 10 marathons (best time 3 hours 23 minutes), he was renowned for running to work - seven miles along the Rideau canal between his home and EDC's office in central Ottawa.
But being by nature convivial and - professionally speaking - a "relationship man", Marshall rejected the ascetic lifestyle favoured by many long-distance runners, and he was often to be seen about town in the small hours with his bankers, whom he would cajole into accompanying him. "You only get to know people by socializing with them," he says. "You don't get to know them in meetings."
Marshall was as adept technically as he was socially.
