China Merchants Bank is the comfortable winner of this year’s award for best bank in China. The Shenzhen-headquartered privately held bank, the first such bank in China, sets the operational standards to which other Chinese lenders, most notably the large state-owned banks, aspire.
From its early days as a regional bank serving the Pearl River delta region of southern China, CMB has transformed itself into a national bank and now boasts a network of more than 400 branches and offices in 30 major cities in China as well as a presence in Hong Kong. The bank has correspondent banking relationships with more than 1,000 international banks in more than 80 countries and territories.
A leader in product and technological innovation in banking in mainland China, CMB was the first domestic bank to launch an online banking platform, and was early in developing its credit cards business, where it remains a market leader. CMB was also a pioneer in implementing international-level credit and risk standards and was the first mainland Chinese bank to obtain an audit to international accounting standards.
