Foreign exchange settlement system CLS has established a new record for the value of transactions processed in one day, soaring through the $10 trillion ceiling.
The latest figure was achieved on March 19 when CLS settled 1,113,464 payment instructions with a gross value of $10.3 trillion, smashing the previous record of 777,596 payments with a gross value of $8.75 trillion, which was set on December 19.
CLS says that through the month of March it was settling an average daily volume of more than 600,000 instructions, with a gross value of $5.3 trillion.
"This latest quarterly settlement date allied with current FX market volatility has ensured we break the previous record for value settled in one day by over $1 trillion. The fact that such a significant value of transactions has been settled without issue reaffirms the value of the safe, secure, risk-free FX settlement offered by CLS Bank," says Rob Close, CLS’s chief executive.
Participation in the system continues to grow and CLS has 2,411 banks, brokers, fund accounts and corporates using its payment-versus-payment settlement service.
